Florentina Carreon Tiotuico
…Her Secret to a Happy Living
by: Manny de Guzman, Jr.

Page 9-B As a Chinese saying goes, “A secret
to a long life is happiness,” and so does the oldest senior at Reagan Street, Cuesta Verde. At the age of 89, Florentina Carreon Tiotuico stays strong and free of any illness. She could still manage to go to church regularly to fill her spiritual needs, even traveling every 3rd Saturday of the month to Angeles Pampanga, her hometown where she’s a member of CDS Order of Carmelite Secular.
“Lola” as she's often called by Reagan kids, was simple and jolly.
Perhaps that’s her secret for staying strong and fit at her age. She says that the key ingredient in a successful and happy life is a strong conviction of the heart, plus a healthy diet and exercise.

She’s the third of seven kids (four sisters and two brothers). They earn a living from the Sugar Mill and plantation owned by their parents.

Aside from being modest and cheerful, she’s also a dedicated
worker. Lola Florentina was a retired Assistant Provincial Auditor at the Commission on Audit in Pampanga. It was in this kind of job where she met her love for a lifetime, Felipe Tiotuico. Felipe is a widow who has five kids from his first wife. She was gifted with two siblings with him: Bong who’s now a professional trader, and Benjamin, who was suffering from down syndrome since birth. When asked if she has difficulty in rearing a child with an ailment like her son’s disease, she readily answered, “Hindi naman ako namroblema sa kanya, kase alam ko hindi naman ako nagkulang sa kanila bilang ina. At ‘yang si Benjamin, napakatalinong bata nyan.

“Lola Florentina was a graduate of a Secretarial course and
Commerce. Her first job was at the Department of Agriculture, where she served as a secretary. Having this kind of job in the government paved the way for her to do public service such as reaching out to the poor and assisting and distributing relief goods to calamity stricken areas. She’s doing the same thing before as a member of the Order of Carmelite.

Nowadays, it is hard to find a family that ‘prays together and
stays together’. But not for the Tiotuico Family where they share common goals and enjoy strong family ties. Their bonding secret? Firm religious belief. Thanks to Lola Florentina who taught them to be God fearing and kind.

The Tiotuico Family has been living happily at Reagan Street since
2003. Both Bong Tiotuico and wife Sol was a member of the Mini Pastoral Council Parish, while Lola Florentina’s grand children, Lynsie (17) and Leejay (33) shares the same faith. Lynsie was an incoming 1st Year Entrepreneurial Management student while Leejay was a graduate of the same course, both ‘mana sa lola’ as they was often touted.

It is the “perpetual vow to serve the lord” that the Tiotuicos really
shine. Like Lola Florentina, Sol and Bong were being seen regularly attending church activities. Despite new sects and religions sprouting, the Tiotuicos strictly remained to their Catholic faith.

This is what Lola Florentina has to say to our generation and the

Take time to listen to our elders. There’s no greater wisdom than
what the experienced seniors could share; like Lola Florentina Carreon Tiotuico, the eldest fella at Reagan Street, Cuesta Verde.
