United We Stand: A Call For Unity. by Manny de Guzman, Jr.
A recent conversation with a Reagan Street folk leads me to this question: is it really pays to change the world? The man whom I’ll just call “Juan Dela Cruz” was commenting on some alleged nscrupulous politicians and showbiz personalities entering politics. With the current crisis our country is facing, it would be hard to believe that you would hear some people say: “No, nothing can be done,” or “It is hopeless.” I can’t blame them. The point is how could we change the world, if we ourselves don’t know how to deal with simple things in our everyday lives. If you really want to change the world, start with yourselves. How? Answer these questions: “Can I handle simple affairs within my family and community? Can I hold back my desires if these would hurt my neighbors? Am I willing to give? If I can be a good leader, could I be a good follower too?” Ask yourselves, it’s worth a try. Or better yet, it’s time for a cool change!
*****
A Call For Unity – Let us consider this little scenario. Imagine ourselves at Reagan Street in the early days where people were just starting to live a simple life. Simple trade system, simple needs and wants, people are trustworthy and united for one common goal: peace and prosperity. Wouldn’t it be nice if we could live a simple life once in awhile and forget about our pride and egos? We can’t turn back time, but we can make a difference if we are guided by some values in the past. One such Filipino value I had in mind is Bayanihan where people would be united and cooperate for a certain goal. Someone’s success is everybody’s achievement. Remember, too much pride and ego will kill every single goal for success. Divided, we can’t achieve anything. But being united, we could do almost anything. And there’s nothing impossible, if we believe!
